Understanding the Canadian Art Market
This new course introduces students to the artists, collectors, and dealers that shape the Canadian art market. Students will be privy to slide lectures, field trips to local auction houses as well as visits to private and museum collections.
This course considers the relationship between patronage and production, how historical and economic factors affect the art market, and how the art market reflects our identity as Canadians. It also includes a survey of historical art groups in Canada including the Group of Seven, Beaver Hall, les Automatistes, Painters Eleven, General Idea, and the Royal Art Lodge.
Midway through the first course I took with Hughene I was hooked. Hughene is knowledgable, informative, engaging and available. Her classes were both educational and fun! I would recommend everyone who is interested in art to join Hughene on this adventure. Now I’m just waiting for the next course to be announced. Thank you Hughene.
Fall 2012 & Winter 2013
Collecting Contemporary Art is a terrific introduction to the art world for people interested in collecting, and artists looking for some insight on how the art industry works. Hughene went the extra mile when planning interesting field trips, and her ability to foster a friendly and engaging atmosphere in the classroom and on outings made me look forward to every class.
Hughene’s knowledge is extensive, and she is incredibly generous with her time. Her course is both informative and very organized. The course included numerous onsite and offsite experiences. I would certainly jump on the opportunity to take more courses with Hughene.
